Basic Strategy Overview
Caribbean Stud strategy is relatively simple compared to other poker games. The decision is binary: call or fold. Here's the mathematically optimal approach that minimizes the house edge.
House Edge with Optimal Strategy: 5.26%
This makes Caribbean Stud competitive with other table games when played correctly.
Always Call These Hands
Premium Made Hands
- • Any pair or better - No exceptions, always call
- • Even the lowest pair (2-2) is profitable in the long run
- • Two pair, trips, straights, flushes are huge favorites
- • These hands have positive expected value against dealer's range
Ace-King Combinations
- • Any Ace-King - Always call regardless of other cards
- • Matches dealer's minimum qualification requirement
- • Wins when dealer doesn't qualify (44% of the time)
- • Pushes or wins when dealer also has A-K
Advanced Strategy: Ace-Queen Hands
The most complex decisions involve Ace-Queen combinations. These require considering the third, fourth, and fifth cards to determine profitability.
Call With Ace-Queen If:
- • AQ-J-x-x: Third card is Jack or higher
- • AQ-T-9-x: Third card is Ten and fourth card is 9 or higher
- • AQ-T-8-x: Only if fifth card is very high (King)
- • These hands have slightly positive expected value
✅ Call Examples
A♠ Q♥ J♦ 8♣ 5♠ ← Has Jack
A♠ Q♥ T♦ 9♣ 4♠ ← T-9 combo
A♠ Q♥ K♦ 7♣ 3♠ ← Has King
❌ Fold Examples
A♠ Q♥ 9♦ 7♣ 5♠ ← No help
A♠ Q♥ T♦ 8♣ 4♠ ← T-8 insufficient
A♠ Q♥ 8♦ 6♣ 3♠ ← Too weak
Always Fold These Hands
Unprofitable Holdings
- • Ace-Jack or lower (A-J, A-T, A-9, etc.)
- • King-high hands (K-Q, K-J, K-T, etc.)
- • Queen-high and below (Q-J, J-T, etc.)
- • Weak Ace-Queen (AQ-8-6-3, AQ-7-5-2, etc.)
Decision Matrix
| Your Hand Type | Decision | Reasoning |
|---|---|---|
| Any Pair+ | CALL | Positive expected value |
| Ace-King | CALL | Matches dealer qualification |
| Ace-Queen-Jack+ | CALL | Marginal positive EV |
| Ace-Queen-Ten-9+ | CALL | Marginal positive EV |
| All Other Hands | FOLD | Negative expected value |
Common Strategy Mistakes
❌ Calling with King-high
Even K-Q-J is a losing call long-term
❌ Folding small pairs
Any pair is profitable - even 2-2 should be called
❌ Calling weak A-Q
A-Q-8-6-3 and similar should be folded
❌ Considering dealer's up card
Basic strategy doesn't change based on dealer's showing card
