Seven Card Stud: Stud Strategy Basics

Seven Card Stud strategy revolves around starting hand selection, card memory, and reading opponents' boards.

Starting Hand Guidelines

Premium (Always Play):

  • • Three of a kind (rolled trips)
  • • Big pairs (AA, KK, QQ)
  • • Medium pairs with good kicker

Playable (Situational):

  • • Small-medium pairs
  • • Three to a flush
  • • Three to a straight
  • • Three high cards

Fold (Usually):

  • • Low cards with no connection
  • • Pairs with overcards showing
  • • Drawing hands with dead cards

Memory & Observation

Success in Stud requires tracking folded cards. If you're drawing to a flush and 4 of your suit were folded, your draw is essentially dead. Similarly, if your pair improvement cards are gone, adjust your strategy accordingly.

Position vs. Board Strength

Unlike Hold'em, your betting position changes each street based on your visible cards. A strong board (like showing an open pair) acts first and can control the betting action.
